great place for japanese food,, they give you sooo much food for the price. They are ALWAYS crowded so just try to make rsvp if possible, The noodles are a must ! Trust me, order yourself an extra side of noodles otherwise you will be sorry you didnt! Best miso soup too

Food is fantastic. Portions are big. However, I am used to a hibachi restaurant having much more showmanship. There is pretty much none here. Just a guy cooking good food. Don't expect any fancy knifework or showmanship. They just concentrate on preparing good food. Make reservations. We waited 90 minutes without reservations. Also, as soon as the chef is done cooking, someone comes out with bags and boxes. They are trying to get you to bag up your food and go so the next table can be set. So, somethings about the experience work great, but the food is really good

Drove from Utica all the way here only to discover they are closed between 2-4:30 :( Yelp hours need to be updated - never the less we stuck around until they opened. The food was great, chef was amazing and waitress was prompt. I would have rated this a 4+ however the hostess was less than amicable and rude upon seating us. We asked to sit in front of chef (which seats were available) and she, Emily, rolled her eyes and walked away, we pretty much sat ourselves and moved our own menus. Our original seats remained empty. Bad first impression just because of one person...

The food is ok. I wasn't wow'd. My step mom is vegan and got the tofu vegetarian hibachi. Strange, they brought the tofu out separately. It was good though. I got the salmon and others at the table had several other kinds of protein. I thought that the food was too salty and they don't have a good ventilation system.

I hate writing bad reviews, but I feel like I have to here. This was the WORST Teppan-Yaki I have ever had. First off it was chewy cheap Flank steak. I love Yum Yum sauce and it was the runniest, no flavor, worst yum yum I have ever had. I went in for lunch and I was so bummed they do not do shows during lunch. I would have never even bothered if I knew that. The rice was okay and the noodles had way too much soy sauce. I was so excited to take my grandkids in for the first time and let them see fire and flip around the spatulas and bowls. Quite disappointed. I would not even bother coming here. The service was nice though. I really felt cheated with low quality food. When you go to Teppan-Yaki it should be quality meat. I was also shocked that a kids small pineapple juice was $3. That's ridiculous.

A group of us has traveled to this location every New Year's Eve for the past 5 years. I think this was our last. A very odd complaint, but valid nonetheless. During the entire meal, approximately 2 hours, all of us experienced odd side effects. Both my wife and I would get a stuffy nose at the exact same time. Then it would release and we were able to breathe again, again simultaneously. This happened numerous times throughout the night. I had a bloody nose that night when we got home. Another one in the group got a headache, and yet another had a general feeling of "not feeling good" right after we left. I would have not thought anything of it, except 4 of us ALL experienced similar side effects. Maybe dirty ventilation system? Some type of gas leak? Sewage gas concern? We are not sure. The food was decent. Our only complaint was that this year the salad dressing was VERY watered down.

I have been here dozens of time and have yet to have a bad experience. The price point is reasonable for what you get. Few hibachi swill give you noodles and ice cream so this is a major plus. The cooks are fast. The draw back is you should make a reservation if you walk in expect to wait. Overall one of my favorite places to eat. You will spend about $30 per person on the low end.

I only heard good things about Hamada, and finally decided to go here with a small group on a Friday night. I have to say the food was excellent quality. The chef cut the filet mignon from whole sections of tenderloin-instead of bringing out pre cut filets like every other hibachi grill I have been to. So the food was great. The chef put on a good show as far as cooking and flipping the utensils around, but wasn't really funny or entertaining like other places. If you are looking for humor and saki to be shot into your mouth, then I recommend Aodake on weber. With all that said, the servers flat out sucked! I had one beer. I could not get them to take the empty or give me another one-the whole time through dinner! They would bring out refills of soft drinks, quickly set them down, and run away! I could hold the empty bottle toward the server and she would see it and turn around. I was as polite as can be, and can also pass as being a respectable citizen. The problem was definitely the staff, not our group. I'll just spend money at Aodake, Zuki, or Tairyo House like I always have.

**Hibachi review only** I've been here twice now. Once two years ago for a friend's b-day and once this past week. First off, def make reservations. Since we went on a Thursday night, we figured we'd be alright, but it was packed and we had to wait almost an hour for a table. The good thing about going during the week though is that they have a special. $22.95 for chicken and steak. The special includes a salad (ranch or ginger sauce.. I'm a ranch hater, but the ginger is awesome. There's a refreshing hint of sweetness in the dressing), soup, the best noodles you've ever tasted, white rice (upgrade to chicken fried rice for $3 -- worth every penny), veggies which include broccoli and zucchini, your two meats, then ice cream. You get plenty of food and for me, it ended up lasting 3 meals. All of the food that I've tried through the hibachi has been great. Last time we came, I got the surf and turf one. Although it was good, I actually ended up liking the steak and chicken better. Our waiter was fantastic. Kept our waters refilled and was very polite to us. I agree with a previous review about how the show isn't impressive. No, it's really not. I don't care about the onion volcano or the flipping of the egg into the hat. Yawn. BUT the food is completely worth enduring the somewhat lame show. I highly recommend Hamada (for the noodles alone..seriously, they are SO good) and it's probably my favorite restaurant in Tinley.
(4)Art V.
Great food and a clean quality place! Love it! Chefs put on a typical show but the kids are huge fans. Just go early the wait can seem like forever when your hungry. My daughter says "The chefs are polite to you!"
(4)Charlie A.
I enjoy hamada, nothing to phone home about. My fiancé and I go fairly often about 2/4 weekends. I always get the sea of Japan and he always gets the chicken and shrimp. I like the noodles alone its the one thing im happy about when we go there. Unfortunately we always seem to go on loud and ghetto day probably because the only times we have outside of work are weekend days. Every Saturday when we happen to randomly go we always fine some inappropriately, over or underdressed, loud, obnoxious group of people who always come in 3's or 4's. We always end up praying that we don't get put at a table with them too. We have been lucky every time to being seated next to some pleasant family with goofy little kids. Service is always fine. On days when it is crowded I can tell you for sure it is not worth the wait. Food is always decent and its a great time with the family if you want dinner on a whim and you aren't super concerned with prices.
(3)Vaughn J.
I went here with my favorite red head. I do believe she had been previously but I had never. The experience was awesome. She was gunhoe about sitting in the middle, at one point the fire looked as though it had gotten close enough to burn my eyebrows off. Anywho, the food was great and there was enough to take home to the bf for dinner.
(4)K D.
Fun entertaining dinner! I had the filet and scallops, but first you get a tasty soup, salad with ginger dressing, the best noodles you have ever had, and a mixture of sautéed vegetables. Everything was very delicious! This is my third time here and I will be back again!
(5)Ron B.
The food was good and the table hibachi show is no surprises(Standard chef playing with food and knife tricks). There were so many birthday celebrations going on sometimes that was the more entertaining show than the chef! Overall, the service was good and normally the wait time was around 30 minutes. expect to pay $16-$26 depending if you want hibachi table. Majority of the large tables are hibachi anyway so bring your wallet and credit card just in case.
(3)Liz Z.
One of my favorite restaurants! When we come here we always do the hibachi which is fantastic. I have had the chicken, filet, lobster, and shrimp. My favorite is definitely the steak and shrimp. There is no need to order an appetizer - this place give you SO much food. Start off with miso soup which is really tasty, then salad, you get two pieces of shrimp as an appetizer, veggies, and noodles - we always as for extra noodles to take home because they are that good and we want to have some with our left overs ... we always have left overs - then you finish it off with either vanilla, chocolate, or sherbet ice cream. I have also tried the egg yolk sauce on my steak which was recommended by a friend - it was different but good. Also you can ask for teriyaki on any of the meat. Will def be back.
(5)Julian C.
Food was really good and I liked the fact that you got food throughout the night so you get full faster and don't overeat. I did not like the ginger dressing on the salad. I have the Royal chicken and shrimp. Drinks were good. I had lots of leftovers
(4)A F.
Staff is rude and all the food tastes the same. They can do a lot better! It was just ok.
(2)Bill B.
I ordered the grilled calamari, the presentation was very different from the menu, very confusing, hit sushi is decent
(3)Ashi'net C.
My review is based solely on my experience with the staff. Yesterday was my birthday. Imagine my surprise when my boss inquired about this resturant. I told her I was somewhat familiar in regards to what I had heard from my friends and reading reviews. She explained to me what she was looking for and asked me to come to the location to see if Hamada's would be a good place to host a dinner for our partners from other countries. In my head Im thinking " Yes, free birthday dinner for me." I make a reservation and get there within the required time frame. Everything was okay until it came to questions about portion sizes. When the food was distributed I noticed that everything was not equal. I figured maybe it was just me ( Everyone ordered Steak and Chicken, I had Filet Mignon) until a lady spoke up and questioned her portion size and my VP questioned his to our cook. My VP's amount of steak equaled to what you see a 3 or 4 year old being served. The cook informed the waitress to get the manager. The manager comes to our table and says I can not see what you have because it is not on your plate. My VP goes on to explain that he had not eaten any of his food and placed it in a box. When asked everyone at the table said the same thing. Another member of the table said could you please bring the cook out so we can all talk. The manager says everyone has a portion and I know he gave you the right portion. To make a long story short From management on down I have never been disrespected to the amount I have last night. They have no regard, loyalty, or concern about customers experiences or satisfaction. FYI if you think your portion is off take it from me: DO NOT BOX IT! The manager flat out called us liars (Table to capacity and no one knew each other and everyone had the same story) People really need to be careful how they talk to people. They never know who they are talking to. Store Owner: You really need to look into your staff. Whoever the manager on duty was on the evening of 7/24 really needs some people managment skills specifically communication. Its one thing to support your employees and take their side but there is a tactful way to do so. As a person in a high position I was embarassed for you. Aside from my birthday I was on offical business scouting venues for a high profile event. I was shocked at the level of unprofessionalism.
(1)Rob C.
Best Hibachi ive had so far. Way better than Benihana. I usually get the steak, chicken, and shrimp combo, and the food has been great on a consistent basis regardless on who was our chef for the night. Much props to Hamada of Japan.
(5)Laneka G.
Dinner is the best thing ever here the couple of times I had dinner I would go with the Sea of Japan which consists of lobster shrimp & scallops noodles, chicken fried rice, double soup for me because I don't like salad and vegetables so much food but oh so delicious just had lunch today and it was kinda horrible the food was good but the presentation was horrible. It felt like they have student chefs working the lunch shift. We had to request the garlic butter the chef had to keep going back to get stuff because the girl didn't take the orders right. Despite all of this the food was still good I will never come for lunch again tho
(4)Daniel D.
Great place to eat if your into the environment and the concept of leftovers!! I enjoyed every bit of this place, it's a must that the public knows its affordable also!
(5)Ashley R.
I am a huge fan of Japanese food as a general statement and hibachi is one of my favorite cooking styles. I've been to many places like this and I had high expectations because Hamada has a great reputation. After all the hype I wasn't as impressed as I hoped I would be. Perhaps it was because I went with a large group? I'm not sure. The food was average at best and I've been to many places with much higher quality and more flavorful cooking for a cheaper price. I don't mind paying for good food but to me this place wasn't worth the price we payed. The chef was entertaining but almost too interactive to the point where my party was a bit uncomfortable. Our waitress was nice but wasn't as attentive as I would've liked for her to be. We had empty drinks several times through out our meals and found ourselves waiting a long time for refills. I didn't hate this place, but I won't be back. The competition simply does it better.
(3)Wendy B.
awesome food, great decor, great service. Love this place. sushi, habachi food, great drinks. all good here.
(4)Edwin H.
Been going there for 8 plus years since my daughter was in her moms stomach and she picked hamada for her 8th birthday on October 14 so we went there n it was as good as the first time. I love the treatment and that your food is prepared in front of you according to you liking and trimmings. Very friendly service and they always keep your water filled always. You can always count on a good meal and good laughs and memories.
(5)Heather M.
The food is great but the service of getting you in as a walk in sucks. This restaurant is not a reservations only place yet they treat it like so and have no respect for taking walk ins within a responsible time frame.
(2)Sade A.
My family and I took my Mom to this location for her 70th Birthday. I don't know why I ignored all the bad reviews about the customer service. While the food was sub par and on the salty side, their customer service is very poor. We brought a cake for my mom and when it was brought out it was completely bashed on the side. When I questioned the manager Jack, he was outrageously defensive and very combative. We had already paid the bill and wasn't asking to be comped or anything, just wanted an explanation or an apology at best. Got none and I can't wrap my mind around how rude and argumentative he was, it was borderline crazy. I gave it 2 stars because of the entertainment of the cook and having the food prepared infront of you. I do not recommend this place to anyone, the food was salty and underwhelming and please believe the other reviews on the poor customer service. Not worth $400+ we spent. Not worth it at all.
(2)Hilda T.
Great food and service. Not a fan of the resturant charging for hot sauce. You would think that this would be complementary.
(4)Liz R.
Sushi review only I was craving sushi, and Hamada's 3.5 star average score sounded much better than the other local place's 2 stars (with 19 reviews = scary!). This is a Japanese Steakhouse with a separate sushi bar. I've never had awesome sushi from a Japanese Steakhouse, so I wasn't expecting perfection... but a flavor bump was definitely needed here. I went with the Red Dragon roll (shrimp tempura inside plus a veritable log of cream cheese... blech) with slices of raw tuna draped over top, bathed in a red sauce that wasn't quite sweet or spicy or salty... just there. My second roll was even less memorable inside, tempura battered and deep fried, coated in eel sauce. Once again, the sauce just wasn't good enough. What was really, really good at Hamada was the Miso soup that came with my sushi order. Some of the most flavorful Miso soup I've had. But a small bowl of soup is no reason to return to Hamada.
(2)Ken S.
Really enjoyed this restaurant. I've been here several times. The food is a little pricey but it's worth it. I prefer this place over Benihana. Will definitely be returning in the near future. The soup is good. The chicken, steak and shrimp are tasty.
(4)William B.
My wife and I used to go there until one particularly frustrating visit. We were there with a group of friends, walking to our table when a waitress spilled an entire tray of beverages on my wife. Her clothes were soaked all the way through, not to mention, stickiness from the pop. She decided she doesn't want to ruin everyone's night (even though we tried to convince her otherwise, after getting a quick "sorry" from the waitress) and stayed. I asked the manager if he could give us a discount, based on our experience and he actually argued with me and didn't want to discount our bill. Will never return!
(1)Matthew K.
I absolutely love the Weekday dinner combo! You get both chicken and steak (with all of the other food before) and an entertaining cook for $20. I love the noodles and the rice. For dinner, you get soup, salad, vegetables, rice, noodles, and meat, with ice cream for dessert. Biggest thing they are missing is some chocolate syrup for the vanilla ice cream!
(4)Cerene P.
This weekend I enjoyed a early birthday lunch here and I had a great time. The food was delicious. I had the lunch special with steak and shrimp. The only difference is when I came for dinner last year the chef put on a show, this time for lunch he basically cooked and that was it. Nonetheless I enjoyed myself greatly and will definitely return.
(4)kevin m.
Service is very pleasant, the staff go out of their way to may you feel comfortable. the food is great, and more than enough to for dinner.
(4)Clint P.
So I revisited Hamada this past weekend. WoW have things changed.... Before you sat there and they attempted to put a show on for you. Everything is RUSHED now! I mean I was in and out less then a hour... I like that to a point but at the same time when the cook was done just got done they give us to go boxes before ice cream is served. Check already out there and REALLY you included the gratuity on 3 people? I leave that with no problems but that 18% was not deserved with the fast pace push you in and out like a factory.... Very disappointed... Food was good though.
(2)K M.
A friend of my best childhood friend suggested this grill! I never been to Hibachi grill before where they cook the food in front of you! My friend along with three other couples sat around a table with a grill in the middle. After the waitress took the order, the cook was expertly scraped his cooking tools together, did a series of creative moods with the food he cooked, and prepared out meals. Very entertaining! I was a little worried when the fire raged in front of me! The food was really good as well as the atmosphere! Hopefully I can go there again! Also, the warm Sake was not too bad! I'm not that use to warm alcohol, but it is something that I will only try once.
(4)Michael S.
Ok... well first off, the entertainment is standard. Nothing really stands out... The chef we had was skilled and showed off a spewing soy sauce onion volcano (never seen that one before), but wasn't that entertaining. I saw other chefs at other tables more engaging. Service, by the male server was good, but wasn't so great with the female server. What bugs me is that it felt like the chef purposely gave some people more food than others. My gf said it was maybe because we ordered the steak and chicken special which is from Sunday through Thursday. Unfortunately, I know others that got the same order and they received bigger portions for their food. If you're going to do something like that, make it so it's not so it is not such an obvious disparity between people's portions. Price was decent and I'll come back if the gf wants, but really, I felt cheated, I will not be suggesting this place as an option to eat at or recommend it to others. Btw... the amount of butter the cook used was MUCH more than I've seen at other places (it was obscene) and some of the food was oversalted I felt.
(2)Lubna S.
It was my first time there, I went there for my cousin's birthday party. I had never been to a Japanese restaurant before also were the chef cooks in front of you. That was awesome. I didn't know you could get allot of food and take it with you, now that earns a point for me. No cooking the next day lol. Overall very nice, exciting, entertaining. I would definitely go back.
(4)James R.
My brothers and I went to Hamada for sushi one night. This is just a review of the sushi side, which I will keep brief. Service was pleasant but only so-so in quality and attentiveness. The Japanese uniforms on the Anglo women look a little ridiculous. Just sayin'. Miso was tepid and lacked flavor. Nigiri had downtown prices but the quality is about what you would find in your supermarket. Some of the names were off as well; Saba is Spanish mackerel, not pickled mackerel like it was here. I would avoid this place and go to Little Tokyo in Homewood. You can do a lot better.
(1)Julie D.
Great place for a Hibachi meal and better than average sushi. If you go on a week day they have awesome dinner specials at great prices. Also, their noodles should not be missed!
(4)Kaitlin T.
Very good food. A little expensive. Great survive. Try not to eat breakfast and lunch cause they give u a lot for dinner.
(5)Susan S.
the place is ok. its always packed. The food to me is very salty. Their ginger sauce is horrible and their prices are much higher then smaller places that have better quality food. Skip this place and go to Fuji or Tokoyo of Japan.
(2)Anthony F.
My son and I love this place. We go here when we can. The service is always top notch and everything tastes great. Their noodles are wonderful. We will be going back again and again.
(4)David R.
Okay, this is the last place in the world that I thought that I would end up on a Saturday night, but I have to admit that it was good food and a good time. Having a five-year-old along made it a lot more fun. First, the food was actually praiseworthy. The soup and salad were so-so, the chicken fried rice somewhat better, but the noodles, shrimp, and steak were all very, very good. Second, it's a pretty good deal if you think about it: salad, soup, noodles, rice, meat, and ice cream, plus a little entertainment, for a reasonable price (varies widely by which meat or meats you select). At first they quoted us an hour wait, but it was only about twenty minutes. We had to share our table with another party which sucked because I don't like people. Our chef was kind of boring, to be honest. I kept waiting for him to bust out some Kill-Bill-type shit but it never happened. The only other time I've been to one of these restaurants was in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, and the guy threw food in the air, twirled his knives around, and squirted sake directly into our mouths. The guy at Hamada just cooked the vittles and goofed around a little. But, we still had fun and the eats were solid.
(4)Sam Y.
One of my least favorite tappan places but your options are limited in the south burbs. Our guy was not very entertaining... do not care too much about him throwing the shrimp tail in his hat or balancing an egg... etc.. but he needs to talk. He needs to be the entertainer... but our guys was not. I think it's more important to be entertaining than to be good at throwing food. I might be a minority in this view however. Thought our 2 year old daughter would like the show but she did not. All in all, it was not entertaining... and if not entertaining.. it's just another restaurant with inflated prices. Price was not the problem though... look for a comedian not a chef... cus what they're doing really cannot be classified as cooking.
(3)Michelle M.
My dear boyfriend (he's actually my husband but he'll always be my sweetheart) took me for lunch today. We went for the Hibachi. It was okay. I've had better. The food was a bit too salty for me. We both ordered the steak. The steak was cooked very well. It comes with either soup or salad. The soup was good. It also comes with a side of veggies (also good) and either white or fried rice. Donald ordered the white rice but ended eating my fried rice because it was too salty for me. The service was better than average. Overall it was really an okay experience but I probably wouldn't make the drive to eat here again.
(3)Jennie T.
First-timer at a Japanese steakhouse and aside from the wonderful display, I'm not a fan of this. My friend and I got appetizer on the other side of the restaurant while we waited. The seafood didn't look very fresh so we skipped on the sushi. We order gomae, and I don't really know why we keep ordering this stuff, I never actually like it. I thought it had way too much sauce and it nearly made me gag. Later we sat with a group of nice people that also attended the tradeshow I went to. It was fun sitting with them, but I had a hard time eating my food. The noodles were way too soggy. And later I thought the chef put way too much soysauce on the fried rice-- I mean, I cook and I know how to make fried rice. You definitely DO NOT need that much soy sauce. It was very disturbing to watch. Don't go here for the food. Go for the fantastic display. That's it. The service wasn't even that great. It was very disappointing.
(1)Jennifer B.
Bad unfriendly service from the hostesses to the cook. Our cook had no personality and was a mute. The food was average at best. Cheap meat, filet didn't taste like a quality filet should taste. Fried rice was bland. Way overpriced for the quality. Party was six and two separate bills and they charged 18% gratuity. They weren't worthy of 15%. Never going back. Rather have Fuji or Zuki or Benihana. Ps when it's 4:30 and your business is DEAD it's okay to seat six of the party of eight ahead of time especially when it takes you thirty mins to bring drinks!! Overrated!!! The quality of food and service is below par - way too expensive for the quality that is lacking!
(1)Kourtney M.
Hmmm...where should I start? Simply put: two thumbs up! They make the food in front of you hibachi style and with all the courses you are sure to be full at the end, so go with an empty stomach. Sometimes the chef even gives you a little show while he's cooking the food.
(4)Nia S.
The food used to be much better. I won't go into a lot of detail because others have. I mainly want to note that the service and attitudes here are sad, lackluster. Used to be better, but since they have become increasingly popular it seems they've lost all enthusiasm. I will give them another try, maybe on a week night and see if there is a diff. But, all my weekend dinner experiences have been unpleasant. But, like I said, the food is good - I'll give them that. But, I'd rather go down the street to Zuki in Mokena or try any of the other half dozen teppanyaki restaurants that are popping up all over the south suburbs, before I go back here on a weekend night.
(3)Ryan M.
It used to be a family tradition to celebrate just about anything at Hamada so no suprise when my Mom decided that Hamada will be the location for her birthday dinner. Fast forward to the night of dinner, we have a reservation, we check in, and we get seated. About 10 mins later they seat another group at our table. 5 mins after that we finally get to order drinks. We ordered they made the food table side and the show has lost some of its entertainment value since they to the same thing everytime. Drink refills take forever and a day and when the waitress finally does bring the refills she DUMPS a pitcher of water in my brothers lap and says Oops! Hello, if you drop a glass of water in someones lap you atleast say your sorry not Ooops, if you drop a pitcher you say sorry and get some napkins or towels. She said Ooops and walked away. My brother decided not to say anything to my mother since it was her birthday he told her the next day and we went back up there to talk to the manager. The manager could have cared less and the waitress came up to the manager and denied the whole thing after one of her co-workers overheard the conversaton. I will not be back to Hamada EVER AGAIN! The fact that this happened is an accident the Rude customer service and attitude of the staff is what will keep me away for life.
(1)Devon H.
The food at Hamada is hands down the best I've ever encountered at at Japanese restaurant not to mention there decor and services are up to par. Thanks for a great experience. See you soon
(5)TJ W.
I EFFIN' love this place! I went there with a friend and she talked about how great the food was. When you arrive, there are about 10 people to a table, so you may be eating next to strangers. If you have issues with someone invading your personal space, this may not be the place for you! The average price ranges from around $20-40. You receive salad, soup and vegetables, noodles and shrimp as an appetizer. The cook prepares everything in front of you. The soup looks like swamp water, but looks can definietely be deceiving because it is ssssoooo good!! I wanted to lick the bowl!! :) Anywho, I order something called the land and sea, which is steak and shrimp. You also receive rice with your meal. They give you so much food, that almost everyone that dines there leaves with a container. If you can smash all of that food in one night, you're definitely a pro! But this place has a great atmosphere, and is worth every penny. I will be going back soon!

Went to Hamada to celebrate my uncle's birthday two weekends ago. We had reservations for 6 people, & once everyone arrived we were seated relatively fast. Although the menu items seem pricey, you get a ton of food for the money. We started with salad (I passed on that), soup (broth was flavorful & hot), noodles, veggies, & shrimp. For my entree, I ordered the Land & Sea - steak & shrimp. Get the chicken fried rice instead of the white - so yummy for only a few dollars more. I loved that everything was well-seasoned & hit our plates quickly. For dessert (which is included), I had the rainbow sherbet. My only complaint is that I felt rushed to leave once we packed up our leftovers. The busboy came over to set the table again while we were still sitting there...I personally enjoy talking & taking my time after my meals. Also, the restroom wasn't the best, but it also wasn't the worst I've been in. Overall, Hamada of Japan serves up savory, plentiful food & I plan to return.

Great food!!!! Go early because it gets really busy every night.

Went for lunch on a Sunday. Good atmosphere, not crowded at the time we arrived. Food was great and plentiful. Nice show by the chef. Will definitely make a return visit!

Had a date with my sister on a Saturday for lunch. This place is very nice and the food is very good. Service is great. They sit everyone right next to each other so it can be a good thing or a bad thing but its a very good way to meet some new people. The only thing I would say that throws people off if they don't know is that they close at 2pm and reopen at 5pm.

I truly enjoyed this place. The food was soooooooooooo great! Don't go hungry, because they take forever to give you your food, (noodles, then veggies, then meat) but it is worth the wait. No complaints. The dishes even reheat well the next day.

I have been to Hamada at least 20 times. I've been for both lunch and dinner. I have never had a negative experience so bad that we wouldn't go again. I think one time during a very busy dinner service, the waitresses seemed a little confused as to who was supposed to be doing what, but if our waitress wasn't available, someone would be by eventually to help. As a former waitress for almost 7 years in various restaurants, it happens. No big deal. The food has always been great, and the service has always been good. The atmosphere is fun and cozy at the same time, and I just seriously can't believe some of the crap I read on here about this place. One complaint I do have though about the seating arrangement ordeal, that is definitely not the restaurants fault, is some of the other guests that go in there. As someone described one time, the 'urban' crowd. For the most part, they are always rude to the cook, have 50 different alterations and subs they need to the meals, which wastes everyones time at the table who is starving, and they are more than likely, on their cell phone the entire time. Get off your stupid phone and enjoy your dinner. No one cares what you did last night at the club, and you don't look cool. Other than that, I always love this place and have reservations for 10 for my birthday dinner tomorrow. To the people who went and were dissapointed, I'd say, give it another shot, I bet it will be completely different.

Another fantastic meal at Hamada. A small group of us went to Hamada for my son's fifth birthday dinner. Despite having spent countless hours and dollars pulling together an elaborate Star Wars party, my son will tell you his favorite part of that day was dinner at Hamada. Go figure! We were told the wait would be about an hour but I hadn't gotten halfway through my drink in the bar area before our table was called. Yay! I ordered the shrimp and found everything cooked and seasoned just as perfect as my first visit. Despite my best attempt to consume every last morsel of food, I had quite the leftovers for the next day. I ordered the kid portion for my son and to be honest, it wasn't much smaller than ours - if not the same size. We certainly enjoyed his leftovers as well!

This was the first place I ever tried sushi. I'll admit, I fell in love. I've been back here several time in the last couple years and none of my visits lived up to my first. The sushi is good, but not great. Now that I'm sushi obsessed I've got lots to compare it to. I wouldn't complain about it though, it's satisfying. My biggest complaint about Hamada is the couple issues I've had with the wait staff...as in failing to let us know they were not taking any more orders...and we had planned to order a lot more. The restrooms are some of the filthiest restrooms I've ever seen. This is a major pet peeve of mine. A truck stop restroom is cleaner than these.
(3)Annie W.
I like this place good entertainment from the chefs, food was good and the bartender made good drinks while we waited to be seated. I would recommend this place.
(4)Terra L.
I am only reviewing this place again because I noticed a drop in the quality of the food. How do you dry out and overcook the shrimp? It was mostly the main course where I noticed the quality change. I ordered Fillet Mignon Hibachi and it was dry and not very flavorful, but the portion size is still large and the staff was friendly. I have to say, I probably won't return here as there are many other options around.
(2)Brittany J.
Love, love, love this place. Great seasoning in their food. Decent prices Great atmosphere for a large group Location is good too, can't miss it! I used to come here for special occasions, but now I just come whenever I'm in the mood. The show is good to see, but I say skip that part and bring out the food, lol. They give you so much food so please come on an empty stomach. I've only sat on the Hibachi side so I'm not sure about their sushi, but it's probably fab as well. My only word of advice is to make a reservation because there will be a wait.
(5)Q D.
Really good food and enough to take home! Great for a group of friends or a first date.
(5)amanda c.
I usually love this place. The food is always great and the atmosphere is good. I think the chefs are very entertaining and I always leave very full. On my last visit, my service was beyond TERRIBLE!!! I was a server and bartender in college and think that I am pretty forgiving. My server was actually mean and indifferent. Overall, I think it will be a long time before I want to return.
(2)Jonathan V.
The food here is absolutely delicious and you will very likely be served more than you can possibly eat. My biggest disappoint from my dinner here is the level of service my party got. To start off the staff wasn't particularly friendly- I'm not saying they were mean at all, just not very friendly or outgoing. While the waitress was not particularly attentive, she also forgot about the shrimp tempura we ordered for an appetizer so we missed out on that and that was a bit disappointing. Our chef was was a little difficult to deal with because he spoke so softly and seemed to speak very little English. The show the chef performed was good and will entertain any first timers, but for those who have seen a Japanese steakhouse show before- if you've seen one then you've seen them all. While I would recommend Hamada, I would say go for the food and I hope you get better service than we got.
(4)K M.
Just a warning to vegetarians- the soup that comes with the hibachi meal is beef based. My family has been coming here for a few years and I never knew that, which was a really, really, disgusting piece of information to get at dinner yesterday. Lesson learned, ALWAYS ASK as you can't trust a menu to divulge ingredients. Otherwise, still a decent enough restaurant for the burbs- if my dad didn't like the noodles so much I doubt we'd ever come here though.
(3)Aja M.
Very entertaining and filling. However, if the food is your main focus, then you may be a little dissapointed. The food is rather mediocre, but will do in a pinch. Hint0 no waiting if you go to the restaurant side with no habachi grills. THen cook your food in the kitchen and its much quicker.
(3)Nancy M.
This sushi would do in a pinch but there is better out there. My absolute favorite is dragon roll and here it really had very little flavor and weren't rolled tight enough and would just fall apart. I haven't tried the teppanyaki so I will not comment.
(3)Rahshonda K.
OK seriously the amount of food they give you at these places are obscene! I had leftovers for days! The place looks like a China Buffet but with grills all around. You sit with people you don't know and enjoy the mini show! Lots of Garlic Butter and High Cholesterol for us all !!!! Overall I would go back the food was decent and the people were friendly!
(3)dana m.
I used to frequent Hamada a LOT when i first discovered it a few years ago. Well as it happens with many restaurants that get successful the service and food start to slip. last time i went i noticed that most of the chefs weren't japanese but mexican! WTF!! i'm not discriminating, but come on. to top it off one of the lady's at our table pulled out a picnic sized hot sauce out of her purse. that was my time at this joint.

I thought that I had reviewed this place before. Because I had such a wonderful experience every other time that I had come to eat sushi. I figured I would bring my social club here for the grill show. What a fuckin mistake! I had made reservations on a Thursday night for ninteen people. Right away I was told that it was to many people and that they couldn't seat us until after 8. Oh! They don't want customers. I see. Well I get there and I walk into a cloud of greasy smoke. You couldn't see it. But the smell was horrid. I thought that the sewer had backed up. As the people arrived we sat around the bar and had a few very expensive drinks. $14.35 for a blue hafrickinwaii. Eight O'clock came and went and the crowd was starting to look at me. I had already been the desk twice. So I told everyone to get up and we would all stand and wait to be noticed. We were seated 10 minutes later. When we went into the dining room, I realized why the place was so smokey. No exhaust hoods over the grills. Nice touch! (You can't have raw fish in this type of atmosphere. It will absorb the smoke and kill the taste.) We ordered more livations and the the server explained the menu choices. Although he forgot to mention that the fried rice was an extra 3 bucks. It is on the menu, but he only gave every other person one. We sit though the show, bla bla. But the food was really good. And as soon as our chef flipped the last shrimp, he immediately started to clean the grill. Dude! The crap was sizzling all over the place. Everyone pulled their plate back. And when he left the server came by to ask what kind of ice cream we wanted. Can we finish our meal first. When he delivered the desert, he threw it on my plate. Right on top of the noodles. If I would have known that this was such a classy joint I would have pulled a couple of teeth out and worn a bib. Again he didn't mention that the green tea ice cream was an extra 3 bucks. Then they kept circling the table to try to get us to leave. Your the one's that made us eat at nine at night. Fuck you now! I woke up the next morning with a taste in my mouth like I had just smoked a pack of cigarettes. My suede jacket has to be taken to the cleaners. Never again. I tried to send an e-mail to the health inspector in Tinley. It wouldn't go through. Now I know why they call it Tinley Trailer Park.
(1)Amanda R.
This place was packed but we got a seat in the bar while waiting and had a drink. The food was good, a bit salty. I had 2 meals to take home with me. My brother that can eat a ton even had leftovers. I loved the noodles and wish you could just get the noodles instead of the rice and noodles.
(4)Amy S.
This place was great! The only thing I didn't like was that we had to wait about 30 minutes, even though we had a reservation, on a weeknight! This was for the habachi, but from what it looks like you can still get that food but not sit at the tables with the grill. The cooks do all sorts of tricks with knives and flip food around for people to catch. You get so much food! I wish that I would have saved some of my noodle/vegetable course for when I ate my meat course. So you get: salad, soup, noodles with vegetables, rice, your meat/fish, desert. It's a fun place to go for special occasions--many people were celebrating birthdays there. I didn't try the sushi, so I can't comment on that.
(4)M. T.
I used to be a long time fan of Hamada, but no longer. The sushi bar was excellent. You could always get a table, no wait, good service, etc. Today the joint is way overcrowded. Overflow spills into the sushi bar. The wait for the sushi bar is long, the wait for your food is long, and the service is terrible. You have to get up and seek out your server for everything: napkins, drink refills, a fork, what ever. And the worst part is the sushi comes out piece meal. Meaning if you order 4-5 different sushi dishes, you get them when them make them, not as one complete order. What happens, is the place is so crowed, and folks in the Hibachi section also order sushi, that they drop in dinning room orders in-between your sushi orders, and I've seen them expedite mistake orders too. The place is an absolute joke these days. The parking sucks too. Stay away. We switched over to Toyko Steakhouse in Tinley Park.

I dined at Hamada of Japan for dinner recently and had a great experience. I made reservations for a Friday evening, and didn't have to wait too long and my guest and I were not rushed. The food was absolutely delicious, our presentation was sort of boring, but the food definitely made up for it. If you are looking for good Japanese food in the south 'burbs, this is the place to go to.
(4)D M.
I've been here a couple times for lunch meetings. I thought that the food and service were very good. We did the whole hibachi thing. No sushi or alcoholic beverages. The lunch prices weren't so bad either for a hibachi place. I believe the prices go up for dinner though. The decor is nice also. The hours are a bit odd though. They close between lunch and dinner I believe. And, just a heads up, the parking lot is usually packed for dinner time. I'd recommend it from personal experience. But, judging from the other reviews, the owners/managers can be rude apparently. I haven't yet been to other hibachi places in the area, so I can't really compare it to them.
(4)Yvette W.
We took my daughter there for her bachelorette party, about 12 of us. The food was great, the service was great except for our waitress who acted like she didn't like her job! Our cook was great and very entertaining. Yes I would definitely go back soon!
(4)Maggie W.
Your typical Hibachi/Sushi place. The food is good, the chefs' show is good, the service from the waitstaff is decent I guess. You get a ton of food. The only problem is you leave smelling like a greasy grill (more so than other hibachi places). I personally think there are better hibachi places in the area.
(2)Mallorie H.
Dee-lish! Love the food. Love the lunch prices. Looking for a Benihana alternative, give Hamada a try. My 10 year-old loves it also.

I recently went to Hamada of Japan for a second time to verify my findings from the first visit. I guess I can safely say that this place is decent. Definitely far from the best Japanese experience, but not bad either. The environment is pretty basic. They have a little water setup with fake animals and real fish with a bridge. Obviously, you don't come to a place to take in the scenery so this is not so important. The staff is relatively friendly. Our chef was great along with the guy that was coming to our table. As for the food, there is no shortage of it and prepare for a gut busting meal. They first start you off with salad, which is pretty much iceberg lettuce with your choice of dressing. I enjoyed the ginger dressing. Then you get a soup which I didn't care for. It looked like oil and a few droppings of some type of noodle or bread. I had no idea of what it was. Then your chef comes to your table. Ours put on a good show which my 2 year old son enjoyed immensely. He starts you off with noodles, which were ok. Noodles really aren't my thing, but they were ok. Just your basic noodles. No seasoning or much flavor from the butter and soy sauce they use. Then comes your fried rice(if you ordered it for an extra $2.75, which is pretty pricey.) Then comes your shrimp appetizer, main course and that's it. I had the Hibachi Salmon, which tasted pretty good, It was fresh. The last time I went there it had tasted as if it was frozen. Maybe they ran out and had to use a backup or something... I don't know. All in all, it's a lot of food that tastes pretty decent. Not much seasoning. They need to have a few more options that other Japanese places have such as Teriyaki Chicken, Beef and Salmon. If it were possible, I'd give this place 2 1/2 out of 5. However, since the chef was entertaining and the staff was friendly, I'll go for 3 stars. It's ok to go here if you've never experienced a place like this. However, if you've been to Benihana's or Ron of Japan. There's probably no reason to go unless you're in the area(South suburbs) and don't feel like being downtown Chicago or the North suburbs of Chicago.
(3)T.J. S.
This is by far the best place I have ever ate at. I know for a fact several famous people agree with me. This is a must eat at.
(5)Christine M.
Honestly I would have never gone to a place like this on my own. I went to a holiday dinner party with a bunch of my co-workers here, and was extremely impressed. I ordered the veggie delight meal which had all veggies in it. I loved the noodles and the rice they give you. Next time I will probably order extra noodles. You will not leave hungry. With all the food you get, you will be leaving with left overs for sure. The pricing was very good too for the amount of food you get. Great place for a big group to go. It was very entertaining watching the cooks, cook your food in front of you too. I am very satisfied and can't wait to go back with my family and friends.
(5)Alaina R.
I get a super craving for the veggies and noodles they serve. We have stopped going to the Hibachi "show" it gets a little old. You can get both sushi and hibachi in the sushi section. Its a lot faster and more intimate, which I like. yum!

Full disclosure: I'm not a huge Japanese steak house fan. I prefer to be as far away from fire as possible and, frankly, if you've seen one onion volcano you've seen them all. There's a 1970s corniness, from the tacky decor to the tacky table presentation that permeates all these places. It was cute when I was 8 going to Benihana for my birthday; not so much at a Benihana-with-a-different-name in 2009. A great friend took me here for my birthday over the weekend and, for sure, we both left stuffed. I also left with a scorching case of heartburn, a really unfortunate bout of gas and a pocket of grease pooled up around my arteries somewhere that didn't thin out until about 12 hours after the meal. As my palette has gotten more refined I simply can't abide by overcooked, improperly seasoned food. And that is pretty much what you get at Hamada. I ordered shrimp and scallops -- which everyone knows (or should know) only take a few minutes to cook. But when you're at a communal table waiting for your food in an assembly line of other patrons, it's not going to come out like it should. My scallops were greasy, garlicky and salty and my shrimp were rubbery and hard. The vegetables -- which should also get a light hand on the grill -- were of course also overdone; a salty, wilted mess. I was unsure why they even offer you a choice of fried or steamed rice when they already serve your food on a bed of noodles. Can you say carb overload? One thing I was definitely looking forward to was green tea ice cream for dessert -- and they were out of it. I think a Japanese restaurant being out of green tea anything is like KFC running out of chicken. It's ridiculous! The one bright spot at Hamada is actually the sushi bar! I ordered a sushi appetizer and was surprised by how fresh it was and how generous the pieces were. I'd have been happier with a sushi meal. In all, Hamada just ain't my style. Judging by how packed the tables were, it's clearly very popular and folks enjoy it. But the heavyhanded "cooking" was an assault on my palette and my digestive system. If there was any scenario in which I'd go back, it would only be for the sushi.
(2)Paula B.
Excellent food. Good service. In terms of the entertainment factor it seems to depend on which chef you get. Some can be quite entertaining. Others hardly interact at all.
(4)April P.
yay, some good sushi and steak in tinley I love the lunch special here, but since it's lunch and it's south suburbs, no can do during the week. They have a pretty good selection at a decent rate have been here numerous times, and never have had a problem with service or quality of food. Parking is plenty, and they are pretty good with giving you exact seating times when place is packed...packed often, might i add a nice alternative to Benihana's if you don't feel like driving to the closest which is in Oak Brook
(5)Alfonsina S.
The food was cooked well, the staff was very attentive and we didn't walk away hungry. Our favorite dish was the soup. It tasted just like onion rings, really. all in all, great place and we're happy we went the extra distance to try it.
(4)Meriel C.
Had a very pleasing dinner hear. It was difficult to make a reservation because when I tried calling phone would ring, ring, and ring. Required some patience, but got through. I was not treated rudely and was seated promptly. They use this yummy garlic butter to grill up everything. Honestly, I want some of this stuff for home because it was great!. Also, I went on a ledge and tried the golden shrimp. It is a sauce made of edd yolk and butter. It was fabulous and I highly recommend it. I was little disappointed that their rice option were chicken friend rice or steamed rice since. I don't like chicken, but wanted some fried rice. They should consider adding other fried rice options. I would go back again because like I said, the garlic butter, wow!
(3)Bess R.
Ah the suburbs... Met some friends here for dinner last night. I couldn't believe how crazy packed it was at 6:30 on a Saturday, luckily we had a reservation. Traditional Japanese steakhouse stuff - tricks with the food, etc. It was a fun time and the food was good. I had filet and scallops. All the meals came with salad (boring iceberg), soup, veggies (which were fresh and delicious), noodles, rice (fried or steamed) and ice cream. My husband has a wheat allergy, and although there was a bit of a language barrier with our chef, he was very kind and kept the soy sauce out of his portions. A nice dinner out - would be a great place to bring kids (not super young kids though).
(3)B W.
I can't believe this place does not have 5 stars, everyone I know loves it. We go here for every occasion imaginable! Birthdays, graduations, Tuesdays! It's literally my favorite restaurant in Illinois. The atmosphere is really nice, the presentation is exciting, and the food is like nothing I've ever had. Make sure you get the noodles, they're amazing! I try finding them in other asian restaurants and have not been able to. Go here! You won't regret it ;)
(5)Mike C.
If you crave hibachi this is the place to go. Great selection of combinations and the amount of food is HUGE. For the hibachi combos, they start you with soup, salad, then the chef comes out and prepares noodles, vegetables and a couple of shrimp...to START then they make the fried rice (or if you go plain white rice) with your protein choice, and to finish, ice cream or sherbert. You definitely will not leave hungry like most other places. Service was attentive for the drinks and the chef, while each have their own style, was pleasant and showed off his skills well. We went on a weekday night so the crowd was not even an issue and were seated right away. I can easily see it getting packed on a weekend night.
(5)Laci S.
Not gonna lie, I was a little frightened to go to a Japanese restaurant, but it did not disappoint. The food was amazing and there was so much of it. Each bite was better than the last. I think this is probably the second best steak I've had since I've lived in Chicago, maybe second best I've ever had. So moist and it had great flavor. I don't get out to Tinley for dinner very often, but next time I do, I will be going to Hamada.
(4)Tiffany D.
I really enjoy Hamada's food. It is pretty much what everyone has described. A word of caution though, this place is currently very popular with young people, so Friday and Saturday nights are the nights to avoid.
(3)Steve B.
We went here Saturday night, the 4th of April for my parents 50th wedding anniversary. We had a table of 9 people for a 8pm reservation and were seated by 8:15. BTY the place was PACKED! We had a excellent time. The food was outstanding as was our chef Augustine. He put on a great show and he looked like he was really having fun.It wasn't boring at all. I ordered the seafood combo which consisted of calamari, shrimp and scallops. It was excellent. The cost for mine was about $30.00 and it was well worth it. While it can get a little warm and smoky in there ( due to dozens of grills going at the same time ) it never once bothered us. The only problem I encountered was, the waitress was sort of a bitch. A young bitch with little diamonds in her nose. A $50.00 service charge was added to our bill which was split between her and the chef. If it was up to me I would of given it all to the chef. Play on spending about $40.00- $50.00 a person for dinner if you order drinks with your meal. Overall we had a great time and cannot wait to go back.
(5)aletha s.
I came here on a business trip with a coworker. Overall you really get your moneys worth. i was so full; when i left i got to the hotel and went straight to bed. The food was good.. standard Hibachi. ive had better yumyum sauce though. I would consider coming back on my next trip.
(4)R M.
I've eaten at this place so much that I know the menu by heart. I haven't been here in about a year now; I've been trying to venture out because this place was becoming a serious habit that was hard to break. If you've never been here before, please know it is THE best Hibachi restaurant in the Chicago area....better than Benihana downtown, which made me seriously ill; better than Chai Tung in Evergreen Park that all my friends love and I can't figure out why because the food is horrible! The food at Hamada is very fresh, the noodles are too die for, the soup is flavorful, the meat is juic and tender, the chefs are very talented (can't figure out how they do all of those tricks), the atmosphere is lively, and the drinks are great! My only complaint...here we go again, the manager! There are two of them, but this particular one...I sure wish I knew his name because I would put him on blasts! He has a serious attitude problem and completely acts as if he hates his job and everyone that walks through the door! Word of advice, never try to go here without a reservation; they are always crowded. One last thing, this place is not affiliated with Hamada of Japan in Vegas. Of course, I had to check on that. I have yet to visit that Hamada but when I do, I will post a review.

The food is really good !!!!
